I’m developing a game called Snail Trail. This is a 2D pixel art fighter game. It is a goofy platformer where the player plays as Pink Man. Pink Man’s only goal is to reach the flags and beat all 3 levels to finish the game. Pink Man must avoid the snails because he is severely allergic to them. Pink Man must also collect as many apples as possible to ensure he has enough food to last his journey back home. As Pink Man beats the levels, he unlocks a hidden talent he never knew he had. Each level has a unique theme/style to it and has a special, hand-crafted layout to slowly increase difficulty.

I built a game in Godot called Snail Trail. This was my first game, so I took it slow and made it simple. I used online assets from an itch.io page and followed a few YouTube tutorials to create the first draft. Eventually, I got the hang of it, and it took me a few weeks to finish the final draft. The hardest part of making this game was definitely trying to figure out what each of the many settings in Godot does and figuring out how to make each level actually fun and playable. I am most proud of my main menu, which took hours to make. I wanted to make it unique, so I actually made it so that the player can play the main menu as a sort of mini-level.

This is the finished and final draft. I added better panels, and exported the game to web and and desktop.

I spent most of this time working on my main menu. I added music, clickable buttons, and integrated it with the rest of my game. I tried to make it like a real playabale level so it is more engaging.

I am still working on the game’s prototype. I am focusing on core features like audio, physics, and collisions. I added collectible apples, a score counter to track your apple count, and moving snails, which are enemies. When you collide with a snail, you die with a death animation. I also added a falling animation and various sound effects like a death sound, jump sound, collect sound, and background music.

I created the first version of my game. I developed this first version using assets from the itch.io page:
https://pixelfrog-assets.itch.io/pixel-adventure-1. This first version just has the core mechanics. It has basic gravity, player control, and a custom map and theme. In my next revision, I will focus on adding the functionality for 2 players, making the map much bigger, and changing to a more neon/sci-fi theme.
