ARES-1 Colony Command is a browser-based Mars colony survival simulation. You’re the commander of humanity’s first permanent settlement on Mars — and keeping it alive is harder than it sounds.
Each Martian sol (day), your colony passively consumes oxygen, food, water, and power. Random crisis events hit every sol — dust storms that kill your solar output, oxygen leaks, greenhouse contamination, crew conflicts, equipment failures, and more. You must make real decisions with real tradeoffs: shelter the crew from a solar flare (costs power) or ignore it (costs health). Quarantine the fungus (lose food) or study it (gain score). Every choice matters.
Survive all 100 sols to establish the colony. Lose your crew or a critical resource and the mission fails.

Added a full Research & Technology tree with 8 technologies across 3 tiers. Spend mission score to research technologies like Advanced Recycling, Hydroponics V2, Nuclear Battery, Oxygen Catalyst, Deep Aquifer Tap, Crew Psychology, Terraforming Dome, and AI Commander. Each technology takes several sols to complete and unlocks powerful permanent colony bonuses. Higher tier technologies require lower tier prerequisites, adding real strategic depth to the game.

Added an animated mission briefing intro screen that plays when you first launch the game. It shows a cinematic typewriter-style mission briefing with a countdown sequence before revealing the difficulty selection. Also polished the overall UI with smoother transitions between screens and improved the game over screen to show detailed mission statistics including sols survived, crew lost, and resources at end of mission.

Added difficulty system with Easy, Normal, and Hard modes. Easy mode reduces resource drain so beginners can learn the game, Normal is the classic experience, and Hard mode increases drain and makes crisis events more punishing for experienced players. Also improved the overall game balance and tested all 10 crisis events to make sure choices feel meaningful.

Added a full building upgrades system. Players can now spend mission score points to upgrade 8 colony buildings including solar array, greenhouse, ice drill, habitat, life support, medbay, research lab and comms array. Each building has 3 upgrade levels with permanent resource bonuses per sol.
