OverRun.sh is my attempt at rebuilding Kali Linux inside the browser. Not just “inspired by it” actually recreating the login screen and desktop visually, step by step. Starting from the LightDM greeter and slowly moving into the XFCE desktop, the goal is to make it feel like a real system instead of just a web page.

still a visual clone but the interaction feels pretty real

(v0.2.0-alpha) Actually shipping this thing

Sooo it’s been a while since devlog #1 but a LOT happened.

The login screen was just the start. Now there’s an actual desktop.

Changelog

  • Full XFCE-style desktop after login
  • Draggable, resizable windows with minimize/maximize/close
  • Taskbar with window list
  • Right-click context menu on desktop
  • App launcher from the dragon icon
  • Working terminal with real commands (ls, cd, cat, pwd, whoami, neofetch, nmap, ping, ifconfig, history, arrow key history, the whole Kali two-line prompt)
  • Virtual filesystem you can actually navigate
  • File Manager with sidebar (Home, Documents, Downloads, Desktop, File System) all working
  • Text Editor
  • System Info (specs are insane btw)
  • Calculator
  • Firefox ESR browser, actual iframe browser with a URL bar, CORS proxy so sites actually load, shortcut tiles, back/forward/reload/home
  • Workspace switcher (1 2 3 4)

OverRun.sh begins

Soo I finally started building OverRun.sh, a private web-based Kali Linux replica..

Not “inspired by Kali”
I mean actually trying to recreate it visually as close as possible.

I decided to start with the login screen instead of jumping straight to the desktop. Real systems don’t just teleport you into XFCE. You go through a greeter first, so yeah doing it properly..

Changelog

  • Exact Kali login wallpaper
  • Live date and time in the top bar (updates every second)
  • Loaded Noto Sans locally so the font doesn’t look off
  • Centered login card with blur
  • GTK-like input styling
  • Hover + focus states
  • Password validation logic
  • Shake animation on wrong password
  • Smooth transition into session
  • Deployed to GitHub Pages

Next Steps

  • Polish login UI more
  • Improve login
  • Start building the XFCE desktop after login
