This project is a high-RPM LEGO vacuum engine powered by household vacuum pressure and paired with a custom multi-speed gearbox. The engine speed is continuously monitored by an onboard control circuit, which automatically engages the clutch and shifts gears using servo actuators. Instead of manual shifting, the system uses predefined RPM thresholds to select the appropriate gear in real time, keeping the engine running smoothly and efficiently. The result is a closed-loop, automatic transmission system that maintains stable operation while the engine speed changes.

I started this project before finding Flavortown, so I was already partway through when I began posting devlogs. The project is a LEGO inline-3 vacuum engine with a custom multi-speed gearbox.
So far, I’ve been working mainly on the gearbox. I designed a servo-driven shift gate and shifter, assembled the 3D printed gearbox parts to check fit, and revised parts like the reverse gear and shaft spacers to fix alignment issues. Most of the work has been iterating between CAD and test fits, adjusting designs as problems come up.
The goal is to have the gearbox shift automatically using servos based on engine RPM. Next, I’ll keep refining the mechanical parts and start integrating everything more closely with the engine and control system.
