I built a game where you are a hamster collecting tools. The tools are wrenches and add points. Collecting garlic subtracts points. I chose garlic because it is a food that is bad for hamsters. There were many really, really challenging parts. One of the most memorable was trying to add a demo link into GitHub. I rebuilt my game so many times. I kept adding stuff into my repository and then deleting them when I had to redo it. I am proud that this is my first game ever shipped to Hackclub. It is also my second game ever made in Unity and my first game made without one clear tutorial, rather from many split pieces.

I spent a BUNCH of time just polishing the game and making sure everything was working properly. I made sure the game could be stopped by using “Escape”. A lot of this time was spent building because I couldn’t figure out how to add a demo link into GitHub. That’s why my repository has a bunch of stuff that says “Deleted: …”. I ended up uploading it to itch.io. I am really happy that it is actually working!

I did a bunch of polishing. Since there is only a week left of Flavortown and I realized that I will probably not do enough to add the game over and main menu, I just decided to leave it at that. I added directions in the top-right corner of the screen.

I updated all the graphics.
I made it not only add points now but subtract them too.
If you eat the garlic, your points get subtracted, (because it’s bad for hamsters),
if you collect the wrench, you get points added because the hamster is trying to collect tools.
For the moment, the hamster is AI generated, but I will change it when I actually ship the game,
its just acting like a place holder

Now I need to add an ending menu after a certain time passes and a main menu where it says the directions.

I added a background timer.
Now I’m gonna make it end the game when it runs out.
I made the code debug the timer in the consul, so it can be seen on the image.

It’s been way too long since I last worked on this.
I just added the score and fixed a bunch of bugs.
Now I just need to add a timer, fix the graphics, and add some finishing touches.
Hopefully, I finish the game before the end of spring break!
Wish me luck :)

I fixed a bunch of things and made my character collect the objects. I also made more objects fall. The next thing is adding the points :)

This took way waaaay too long to do, but I now have objects spawning and falling at random locations.

Fixed movement and character positioning. Figured out what to do next.

I set up an empty Unity project, making sure Hackatime works with it, and adding a Readme plus a .gitignore. It took me a while since I’m new to coding, but I made the character move to the left. At the moment, my placeholder for my character is a circle, but I am going to change it later.

I’m working on my first project! This is so exciting. I can’t wait to share more updates as I build.
